One thing that stands out in the Scottish capital is the abundance of slate roofs – a true icon of the area!
Spanish Slate
With traditional Scotch slate becoming increasingly rare (see our Scotch slate roofing project in Bo’ness – linked), we often work with Spanish slate. Like Scotch slate, Spanish slate is a natural material. However, instead of being hand-cut, it is machine-processed into uniform sizes. This consistency ensures Spanish slate meets the modern standards and environmental requirements for UK roofs. Over time, we anticipate Spanish slate will become even more common as it replaces older, traditional roofs. That said, many Scotch slate roofs can last up to 100 years, so they won’t be disappearing any time soon!
A Recent Project in Edinburgh
One of our recent projects involved replacing a Spanish slate roof in Edinburgh. The roof suffered from severe water ingress due to poor workmanship by a previous contractor. Our primary goal was to make the roof completely watertight – an absolute necessity in Scotland’s climate!
During this project, we repaired the chimney, replaced lead caps, guttering, watergates, and valleys. These repairs were made possible thanks to the lead bossing expertise our team developed through specialized training (check out the video). Additionally, we replaced the slates and installed a Velux skylight (link to skylight blog).
